Government on brink of shutdown ahead of midnight deadline as McCarthy slates last-minute vote (CNN) — Federal agencies are making final preparations with the government on the brink of a shutdown and congressional lawmakers racing against Saturday&#’;s critical midnight deadline – as House Speaker Kevin McCarthy mounts a last-minute push to avert the lapse in funding.McCarthy announced that the House will vote on a 45-day short-term spending bill Saturday, and it will include the natural disaster aid that the White House requested. Asked if he is concerned that a member, including Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, could move to oust him over this bill, McCarthy replied, &#“;If I have to risk my job for standing up for the American public, I will do that.&#”;Infighting among House Republicans has played a central role in bringing Congress to a standoff over spending – and it is not yet clear how the issue will be resolved, raising concerns on Capitol Hill that a shutdown, if triggered, may not be easy to end. Downtown Ice returning to San Jose for the holiday season Who says wishes don’t come true? After the long-running Downtown Ice rink in San Jose went on hiatus last year, the San Jose Downtown Association got the message that people considered it a vital part of their holiday season. So it’s back this year and will open in the Circle of Palms on Nov. 17.Last year, the company operating the ice rink pulled out too late for the city to find a comparable replacement. The San Jose Downtown Association sprang into action, and Liz Ruiz, owner of Aloha Skate at Eastridge Center, stepped up to produce a tropical-themed roller rink on the site. It was fine as a replacement, but it was obvious people were hoping for something, well, cooler.“People enjoyed roller skating, but we heard loud and clear that families and friends from all parts of Northern and Central California missed their tradition of coming to skate at our ice rink,” said Tricia Lee McNabb, who has managed rink operations since 1997.Livermore-based Special Ice, ...

Rahm says Koepka criticism was over something that wouldn’t register on ‘Jon anger’ scale

Rahm says Koepka criticism was over something that wouldn’t register on ‘Jon anger’ scale GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — Brooks Koepka could have used a board to pound Saturday in the Ryder Cup. Jon Rahm didn’t need one, and he doesn’t know what caused all the fuss.Koepka kept everyone guessing — about the incident, not his blunt nature — when he accused the Masters champion of pouting after their fourballs match Friday afternoon, which Rahm ended with a 35-foot eagle putt.“I mean, I want to hit a board and pout just like Jon Rahm did,” Koepka said in the television interview. “But you know, it is what it is. Act like a child. But we’re adults. We move on.”Rahm filled in the details, or what he could make of it, after he put up another point for Europe in Saturday foursomes.“I mean, I’m not going to stand here and say I’m a perfect example on what to do on a golf course. I don’t think either of us two are,” Rahm said as he sat next to Tyrrell Hatton, another player known for expressing his feelings for all to see. “But I play and compete.”The moment to whi...
